Hospital for cats, 1882. 'The "Hospital for Cats"...is located at No. 170 Division street,...and is conducted by Mrs. Rosalia Goodman, a philanthropic German lady. She devotes the greater part of her time to the comfort and relief of neglected and persecuted felines...The house she occupies is a three-story wooden structure...She has lived there for a number of years, and makes a comfortable living by renting rooms, retaining two for herself and her cats. Besides many pets who for years have been kindly cared for, the family is being constantly increased by the addition of unfortunate tabbies whose wants are brought to the notice of the worthy lady. So well is the idiosyncrasy of Mrs. Goodman known in the neighborhood, that whenever one of her neighbors finds a cat in distress, it is taken to her, and is always welcomed. Her room presents a most singular appearance. It is literally filled with cats of all sizes and descriptions, who crowd around the good lady, perch upon her shoulders, and nestle in her arms. She prepares their food with her own hands, and carefully ministers to all their wants'. Page 622 of "New York by sunlight and gaslight. A work descriptive of the great American metropolis, etc", 1882. [Philadelphia, Pennsylvania]
