Dormition of the Virgin, c1400-1425. The Dormition of the Mother of God is a Great Feast in Christianity which celebrates the "falling asleep" (death) of Mary the Theotokos ("Mother of God", literally translated as God-bearer), and her being taken up into heaven. The Feast of the Dormition and the Assumption of Mary are observed on August 15.
