Crusaders besieging Damascus, late 15th century. Siege of Damascus during the Second Crusade, 1148, with the armies of, upper left, King Baldwin III of Jerusalem, right, Emperor Conrad III of Germany, and, lower left, King Louis VII of France. It ended in a crusader defeat and led to the disintegration of the crusade. Manuscript illustration, possibly from the "Chronique d'Ernoul et de Bernard le Trésorier" produced in Bruges, or from a translation, into French, of the Latin history of the Crusades by Guillelmus, Archbishop of Tyre (1174-c1190).
