Hyde Park Gate News, family magazine produced by Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell, 1891-1892. Page from a magazine by Vanessa Stephen (afterwards Bell, painter) and her sister Adeline Virginia Stephen (afterwards Woolf, novelist). 'Mr. Thoby Stephen's birthday was on last Thursday. It was of course raining all day except during 2 or 3 hours in the evening. Mrs. Stephen gave Mr. Thoby a very handsome box, to contain his butterflies and moths. Mr. Gerald Duckworth always gives him a splendid display of fireworks in the evening. Mrs. Hunt accompanied by her little family and those who are staying with her came up early in the afternoon and played games until tea-time. They played the exciting game of "Cat and Mouse" and even Mr. Headlam was made to join. He caused great amusement by sitting down in a chair when he was mouse and allowing Miss Stillman who was cat to run round and round after him thinking that the juveniles were laughing at her for not catching him. Mrs. Stephen tried to guide her toward him but she seemed to have an instinct which would not let her touch him. Uproarius laughter continued during the whole scene. Thus passed the afternoon. Tea was soon announced and the whole party trooped merrily into the dining-room, Near the end of the tea Mr. Thoby Stephen...'.
