From 1640, George Thomason, a bookseller at the Rose and Crown in St Paul's Churchyard, London, assembled a collection of pamphlets and other printed matter relating to current affairs. By the time he stopped in 1661, he had accumulated 22,255 pieces which were bound in 2008 volumes
