The Tree of Jesse, 1121-1161. The Tree of Jesse is a diagrammatic representation, often found in medieval art, of the genealogy of Jesus Christ. It originates with Jesse, father of King David, who is depicted at the bottom, with the tree springing from his loins. Above him is David, the Virgin Mary, Christ, and at top the Holy Ghost. On either side are prophets holding scrolls. From the Winchester Psalter [Psalter of Henry of Blois; Psalter of St. Swithun], made at Winchester [Priory of St Swithun or Hyde Abbey].
