Notification of the burial of Napoleon, 1821. In this excerpt from the Parish Register of St Helena towards the foot of the page, which lists burials, the entry for 9th May records; 'Napoleon Bonaparte, late Emperor of France; he died on the 5th instant, at the old House at Longwood, and was interred on Mr Richard Torbett's Estate'. Napoleon had been living in exile on St Helena following his defeat at Waterloo in 1815. At the top of the page is an entry for 'Sophia Chambers Slave to Lieut. L'Estrange [Hill?] 66 Regt'. Also listed are the deaths of four more slaves, as well as 'infants', 'invalids', 'illegitimate' offspring, and someone who 'drowned in the surf'.
