The Astolabe caught in an icefield on its voyage of exploration to the Pacific Islands, 9 February 1838. The crew of the Astrolabe, under the command of Captain Dumont d'Urville, work frantically to free the ship. It took five days to break free from the ice-filled lake. During the process a number of the crew suffered from frostbite.
