Group of Bactrian camels and camel drivers, Afghanistan, c1879. Bactria was an ancient Greek kingdom in central Asia. Its capital was Bactra, which is the present day Balkh in the north of Afghanistan. In 1850, Balkh became part of the unified kingdom of Afghanistan.
