George Alexander MacFarren, composer, 1881. MacFarren (1813-1887) was Principal of the Royal Academy of Music, Professor of Music at Cambridge University and conductor at Covent Garden. Despite failing eyesight, which led to blindness in 1865, he remained a prolific composer, writing 18 operas, 13 oratorios and cantatas, 9 symphonies, and 162 songs.
