Henry Morton Stanley, African explorer, 1880. Stanley was sent by the New York Herald to look for Dr Livingstone, who had been lost for two years in central Africa. Stanley met Livingstone in 1871, and stayed with him until early 1872. Livingstone then set off on another journey and never came back. Stanley's greatest journey was the crossing of Africa to the Atlantic which took him from 1874-1877. He again crossed Africa in 1887-1889, and in doing so contributed to laying the boundaries of what would become Uganda and Kenya. His publications "How I found Livingstone" and "Through the Dark Continent" gave detailed accounts of his travels.
