Wall of the City of Yang-teheou-foo, drawn by Mr. Barrow, 1793. This view of a Chinese walled city and boats was made during a mission to Peking, by Sir John Barrow. In 1793, George Macartney, 1st Viscount Macartney, travelled to Peking as ambassador of King George III, the first formal diplomatic contact between the two most powerful empires in the world at that time. Barrow was comptroller of Macartney's household during the trip to China and afterwards Secretary to the Admiralty.
