Sir Francis Drake, c1743-c1751. Portrait of Drake (1540-1596) made in the 18th century. Below the medallion portrait are examples of navigational equipment which reflect his role of a navigator; a globe, a compass, rolled up maps, an anchor, telescopes. These surround a small picture of a naval battle, probably a reference to the Spanish Armada. To the left of his portrait is a trident, an attribute of the sea god Neptune, and two cherubs representing the winds. The bottom of the plinth is decorated with shells, another reference to the sea. Drake circumnavigated the globe 1577-1580, and played an important role in defeating the Spanish Armada in 1588.
