He attempted to record the thinking of his day on such subjects as theology, psychology, astronomy, medicine, agriculture and botany, to name but a few. In the background, books are placed on sloping shelves. Borders of foliate decoration, with the arms of King Edward IV, for whom the manuscript was produced. From Speculum Historiale, Book 1.
