Elephants fighting, India, 1850. Two elephants attacking eachother; one man has fallen or been trampled and lies injured or dead. Men on the elephants' backs cling on and poke the elephants with sticks, another applies flames to the foot of one of the elephants; whether in an attempt to stop the fight or to encourage it to continue is not clear. One of the elephants has broken its tusk. In the background other men wash an elephant in the river. From " Wanderings of a Pilgrim in search of the picturesque during four & twenty years in the East; with revelations of life in the Zenana" by Fanny Parks. (The zenana is the harem or women's quarters).
