Dante and Vergillius, c1300-c1321. On the far left Dante and Virgil are on the bank of a river. In the centre they are crossing the river with a monster rowing the boat. The river is full of tortured souls, one of whom is trying to get into the boat. On the right they are at a gate, behind which are devilish monsters. Dante was a great admirer of Virgil, and in his work The Divine Comedy, Virgil accompanies Dante through Purgatory and Inferno. From "Divina commedia" (The Divine Comedy).
