Colombia Market, Bethnal-Green, [London], 1865. 'The new market [financed by Angela Burdett-Coutts]...will be quadrangular...The west side is nearly completed, and its outer facade is shown in the Engraving...The north side will consist of a large market-hall and covered market...The west side...consists of a central tower and two wings, and six intervening dwellings and shops. Each wing contains four flats, or residences...the dust will be conveyed away by shafts, and the supply of water will be good. The interior area, or market-place, will be surrounded by arcades, upon which will be first-floor flats, with open balconies of stonework. The design is old English of a good period; and the outer façade is more embellished than the inner. The material is fine brick, with stone finishings...The upper portion of the tower is highly ornamental and, with the roof-erectings and decorated gables, makes a very effective composition, judiciously broken in the line. The tower will contain the machinery for the water-supply of the whole market; it will be very liberal, which is most essential for market purposes, as well as for private use...This new market has been designed by Mr. Darbishire, architect...The builders are Messrs. Cubitt and Co.'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865.
