The Funeral of Lord Palmerston: the procession passing Charing-Cross, [London], 1865. 'Our Illustration shows the aspect of the procession at Charing-cross as it turned to go down Whitehall, the vast open space on the south side of Trafalgar-square being thronged with an immense assemblage of spectators, who could have a view from behind of nearly the entire procession at once, when its rear had got well out of Cockspur-street...The route was along Piccadilly, down St. James's-street, along Pall-mall to Charing-cross, down Whitehall and Parliament-street, to the Broad Sanctuary in front of the great west door of the Abbey, a distance of perhaps a mile and a half. The ordinary traffic in these streets had, of course, been stopped. The side pavements were everywhere crowded; at the windows, in the balconies, and sometimes on the roofs of the houses was a gazing multitude. Black drapery adorned the fronts of several of the clubhouses...The Carlton was not in mourning attire, but its members, who mustered in great numbers on the steps or at the windows, saluted with bare heads the funeral of the late Premier, as it passed along Pall-mall'.
