Lord Brougham opening the Social Science Congress at Sheffield, 1865. View of 'the inaugural address of Lord Brougham at the opening meeting of the ninth annual Congress of the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science...[The meeting] was held in the Alexandra Music-hall, formerly a theatre, but now a handsome and convenient place of assembly for any public occasion...The report read by Mr. Hastings, the general secretary, stated that about 1000 members, associates, and ladies had attended the meeting...'.
