The War in Denmark: Prussian outpost at the corner of Büffel-Koppel Wood - from a sketch by our special artist, 1864. View of '...one of those rude straw huts improvised for the shelter of the Prussian soldiers on outpost duty in various directions around the encampment of their army at Broacker. The Büffel-Koppel Wood, which is traversed by the high road from Flensburg to Sonderburg, is situated between the inlet of the Nübel Noer to the west and the heights of Düppel to the east, occupying the little isthmus or neck of land which joins the Broagerland peninsula to the mainland of Sundewitt. It is essential, therefore, to the safety of the Prussian army, that they should guard this position against a sudden attack. As it commands the road to both the hostile camps, all passing strangers are stopped and narrowly scrutinised by the non-commissioned officers stationed there. In our sketch we see a gentleman on horseback, who has just submitted his passport to the inspection of the sergeant, and appears to be replying to his questions upon it'.
