The cricket-match between Madras and Calcutta: the Madras Eleven, 1864. Engraving from a photograph by Mr. B. Smith, of the '...portraits of eleven members of the Madras Cricket Club who lately went to Calcutta to play against the Calcutta Cricket Club. Attempts had been made in previous years to bring the two elevens together, but were discountenanced by the absurd notion...that a good seat in the saddle or a good hit to square leg is evidence of an idle disposition in the members of the civil service. It required some courage to make the announcement that eleven men wanted permission to leave their Presidency for such a frivolous pursuit as a game of cricket...The total score for Madras in both innings...was 265; and for Calcutta, both innings, 204. Madras, therefore, remained the winner by no less a majority than 61. The Madras Eleven consisted of Mr. H. Linton, Mr. P. Hutchins, Captain Jago, Mr. E. W. Breeks, Mr. F. Brandt, Captain Beckley, Mr. R. Melville, Captain Liardet, Captain Hope, Mr. G. Leman, and Captain Hallett. Mr. Linton is the gentleman with a handkerchief about his head, and with his bare arms crossed, who stands in the middle, being the fourth of the standing figures; Captain Beckley stands at his left hand'.
