Testimonial to the late John Strang, Esq, L.L.D., City Chamberlain of Glasgow, 1864. '...a very handsome testimonial was presented to the late Dr. John Strang, for nearly thirty years Chamberlain to the Corporation of the City of Glasgow...the bailies, councillors, and other members of the Glasgow municipality...commended Dr. Strang, not only for his official conduct and for his private virtues, but for his active furtherance of almost every useful public object in Glasgow during the last half century...Dr. Strang then received the sum of money which formed part of this testimonial, and thanked the subscribers for having thus relieved him of all pecuniary anxiety for the remaining days of an already protracted life. The silver vase which had been ordered for him was to be manufactured by Mr. D. C. Rait, of Glasgow, from the design of Mr, W. Beattie...It is now finished, but Dr. Strang no longer lives, and it will be delivered to the survivors of his family. The vase is of classic form, copied from an antique. There is on each side a figure of Innocence, reclining on a festoon of ivy and oak suspended from two goats' heads, which form the handles of the vase. On the silver pedestal is engraved an appropriate inscription'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864.
