The War in Schleswig: Apenrade, lately the Austrian head-quarters, 1864. 'The town and port of Apenrade - or, as it is called in the Danish language, Aabenraa - is situated on a gulf of the eastern coast of Schleswig, some twenty miles to the north of Flensburg. The peninsula of Sundewitt, now occupied by the Prussians, is formed by the Gulf of Apenrade to the north and by the Flensburg Fiord to the south. The Austrians, when they moved on from Flensburg, in the middle of last month, took up their quarters at Apenrade; but General Gablenz, the commander of the Austrian forces, remained there only a few days. A few only of the Austrian troops are now stationed there. The present head-quarters are at Hadersleben, still further to the north, and close to the frontier of Jutland. The View shows the aspect and position of the town of Apenrade, on the edge of an alluvial plain washed by the waters of the gulf'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864.
