The new "Tattersall's" at Knightsbridge-Green, [London], 1864. Auctioneer of race horses. 'The front displays a central gateway, with pediments beautifully carved, and two side entrances; the wings consist of two square blocks of yellow brick with Portland stone dressings, pierced with six windows on the two floors, and surmounted by stone parapets with ball terminals. The left-hand block is dedicated to the subscribers; the right to the secretary's offices, business departments, harness-rooms [etc]...At the south-west comer is an area...for open-air betting, with a telegraph office...The whole yard is covered by a gigantic roof of Hartley's patent glass, 150 ft. in length, 102 ft. in breadth, and 60 ft. high. It is supported by iron girders, and constructed to admit or exclude the external air at pleasure...opening into this inclosure are some of the stables, of which there are in all ninety-eight stalls and twenty loose boxes. Behind...is a wide roadway, upon the side of which are some of the loose boxes (intended for entire horses and mares with their foals)...The architect of the whole building is Mr. Charles Freeman, of Lincoln's Inn; the builders are Messrs. Holland and Hannen, of Belvedere-road'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864.
