The Government-House, Canterbury Province, New Zealand, 1864. View of '...the Government House at Christchurch, the capital of the province of Canterbury, New Zealand. Each province of that colony has its own Legislative Council, and its own Superintendent, elected by the people, to conduct the business of the Executive authority in the province; while the Governor, aided by a Legislative Council and a Parliament, or General Assembly, of delegates from the several provinces, presides over the colonial Administration at Auckland. The Middle Island, of which Canterbury, Nelson, and Otago form the chief component parts, has fortunately been exempt from those troubles with the Maori tribes by which the progress of other settlements in the North Island have been so much impeded. We are glad, however, to regard the submission of the Tauranga natives...as an indication that the costly and inglorious conflict with the Maoris is now drawing to a close'.
