The new Roman Catholic cathedral at York, 1864. Interior of '...the most important and sumptuous place of worship erected by the Roman Catholics in Great Britain...A spacious nave and choir, lateral aisles, a Lady Chapel, a tower rising to the height of 150 ft. and forming a baptistery, a chapter-house, and convenient vestries, afford all the requisite accommodation...Several windows are filled with fine stained glass, and the vaulted roof of the choir is richly illuminated. In the high altar...appear the several Patriarchs of the Old Law whose lives are typical of the Messiah, with four lifesize statues of the Evangelists. The sculpture was executed by Mr. Earp...Mr. Wailes...supplied the stained glass; Messrs. Pears and Jackson...the metal-work; Mr. Hayball...the wood carving; and Mr. Castell...the decorations. The general contractor was Mr. Weatherby, the Under Sheriff of York. The whole building, with its elaborate fittings and ornamentation, has been completed at the remarkably small cost of little more than £10,000 - a fact which does almost as much credit to the architect, Mr. Goldie...as the unusual merit and beauty of his design in all its parts'.
