The International Exhibition: architectural clay manufactures of the Shropshire coalfields, 1862. 'The encaustic pavement in the centre is...in colour red, black, and cream-yellow. The outer border has the ornament cream-coloured on a black ground, then comes a broadband of the low-toned red (Indian red), then there are cream triangles on a black ground...the outer border is repeated, then follows the central filling, which consists of plain black triangular tiles, plain red tile of the same form, and square red tiles enriched with cream ornament. This is one of those successful pavements which must ever enhance the beauty of a conservatory or hall...The chimneypot to the left...is of cream-coloured clay, yet into all the indentations a red maroon colour is introduced. That at the right is of a more attractive character, as red, blue, and green are liberally applied to the cream-coloured surface. The success of the works exhibited by Messrs. Maw and Co. leads us to regret that colour is not more used in the construction of our dwellings than it is, for here the means are afforded for its general adoption. The object in the front of our group is a flower- box formed of the Shropshire clay. In design it is modem French of a florid character'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862.
