Visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales to Denmark: arrival at the Castle of Bernstorf, 1864. The future King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in Scandinavia. 'A triumphal arch was erected immediately outside the entrance-gate, in the decorations of which oak-leaves and forest flowers and berries were combined with the produce of private gardens. The English and Danish flags floated from the summit, and the arms of the two countries, painted upon shields, were exhibited from each front...For more than a mile from the gates of the castle the road was lined with a well-dressed crowd...welcoming [the Princess's] return in the twofold character of happy wife and mother...The band played the English National Anthem, and the choir sang the verses composed in honour of the Princess of Wales...the crowd...burst into enthusiastic cheering for her Royal Highness, for the King and Queen, for the Prince of Wales their son-in-law, and for all the Royal family...The Queen of Denmark, who sat beside the Princess of Wales, acknowledged very graciously the share of compliments intended for her, but looked equally gratified at those addressed to her daughter... Princess Alexandra passed most of her earlier years...' at Bernstorff Palace near Copenhagen. From "Illustrated London News", 1864.
