Bald Eagle, Wells Hawks, 28 Jul 1917. Native American "Chief Bald Eagle" shaking hands with Lieutenant Wells Hawks (1870-1941), a member of the Navy's public relations team aboard the USS Recruit. The ship was a wooden mockup of a battleship built in Union Square, New York City by the Navy to recruit seamen and sell Liberty Bonds during World War I.
