The International Exhibition: Honiton lace flounce by G. F. Urling, of Regent-street, 1862. '...one of the most exquisite examples of the fabric...for delicacy and perfection of workmanship, for richness of style and variety of stitch, [this example] has not been surpassed in this country...[It was] made by a young lady of eighteen years of age...it is remarkable how much scope has been afforded for ingenuity in the technical details of construction, and how fully such advantages have been turned to account. The pattern comprises two principal elements; the fern, so well adapted by the flexibility of its foliage to fall naturally and gracefully into any outline, and the rose, claiming for its perfect representation, under many aspects the choicest skill of the manufacturer...The fern and rose are once more visible in the mazes of the Arabesque border...The background is here substituted with excellent effect, as the special point of attraction, and embodies in different sections of the pattern the peculiar attributes by which various classes of pillow-lace are severally distinguished. Tho width of this flounce is forty-two inches; its length five yards and a half, the price being two hundred guineas'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862.
