The International Exhibition: group of Wedgwood and majolica ware, by Wedgwood and Co., 1862. 'The artist who has produced them, Mr. Lessore, is undoubtedly a man of talent and genius...In the centre of the group is a large platter or dish on which is depicted Europa sitting on the bull's back...Immediately to the left of this is a large vase of an elongated form...In the upper portion of the vase an orange-yellow prevails, and the oakleaves at the base are in a sage-green...Immediately to the right of the large platter is an interesting vase mounted on a stand, bearing a classic subject, in which a chariot is introduced, drawn by spirited steeds...The vase on the extreme right of the group presents to us a good sketch of "first steps." The little central vase has a cream ground and a turquoise line round the subject, and, like the little three-handled vase, is of a pleasing character. The other vases - that bearing the snowdrops and that to the extreme left of the group - are in what is commonly known as Wedgwood ware, the ground being a rich dead purple-blue and the ornament wrought upon them in relief white forms'.
