Luther's room at the Wartburg - from a sketch by our special artist, 1862. 'The three pictures over the Gothic case on the left of our Engraving of Luther's room are portraits of Luther, his father, and his mother. On each side of the case are autographs of Luther, framed; and on the shelf at the left hand is a frame containing two portraits. The armour over the door was worn by Luther. Luther has himself described in his writings the attacks to which he was here subjected, in his solitary hours, from the Evil One, whom he is reported to have repulsed by throwing the inkstand at his head; and in confirmation of the tradition the inkspots were shown upon the plaster wall, which has, in consequence, been scraped away by the relic-collectors'.
