The Loch Leven Trout, 1862. 'Little can be said by naturalists about this fish except that it is a speciality among trout; and, although some learned people consider it identical with Salmo fario, we beg to differ with them never having found, in all our piscatorial wanderings a marrow to the trout of Loch Leven. These fish spawn in the beginning of the year and about the end of April are sufficiently recovered for the pursuit of the angler...The fine flavour and rich colour of the trouts of Loch Leven are supposed to result from the peculiarity of the feeding-ground and the fish is said to have declined in flavour since the loch was partially drained'.
