The Powan, 1862. 'The powan, as it is called by Parnell, is classed among the Salmonidae, and it is found in great quantities in Loch Lomond. Although we have once or twice seen a few taken by clever anglers by means of a small fly, they are usually caught, like the vendace, with a large drag-net, but they have never been known to be caught with bait...In the months of August and September the powan is in the best condition for the table: they are then considered well-flavoured, wholesome, and delicate food. They shed their spawn from October to December, and remain out of condition until March'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862.
