The Capture of Ningpo: breaches in the city wall, 1862. 'It was found that the rebels were in great force under the walls, and from the nearest bastion and other points where cover was afforded by the ruined brickwork they soon poured a very heavy fire into the look-out. It was here that our first casualty took place - Dr. Hogg, Assistant Surgeon, being shot through the left forearm, and shortly afterwards Alfred Cannon, gunner R.M.A., fell dead, shot through the head...The Kestrel and Etoile now came up and sent their landing parties on shore...At three the storming party advanced and placed the ladders under a heavy shower of brickbats, stones, and stinkpots, and were led by Captain Dew and Lieutenant Kenny, senior French officer commanding the Etoile. On reaching the top of the walls (about twenty-five feet high) they met with a most determined resistance. The first man to fall was David Davis, leading seaman of the Encounter, who was shot through the heart; Lieutenant Kenny was dangerously wounded, shot through the chest...But the walls were gained and the enemy driven from their shelter beneath, many of them falling by revolver shots'.
