The International Exhibition - Whitworth's self-acting radial, drilling-machine, etc., 1862. 'The collection of tools first met with on entering the annexe is that of Mr. Whitworth. It comprises specimens of all the principal machines constructed at his works at Manchester: they are of the highest class as to workmanship and design. No man has done so much towards perfecting the art of toolmaking as Mr. Whitworth; the productions of his workshops are celebrated all over the world...Our Illustration represents a group of the machines in Mr. Whitworth's display: the principal is a large recently-introduced machine called a self-acting radial drilling and boring machine; the radial arm carrying the drill-spindle is movable through an arc of 200 degrees; it is attached to a vertical slide worked by a rack and pinion with worm and wheel on the main frame; the drill-spindle works through a tube, and is adjustable horizontally by a screw and nut from one radius to another; it has a variable self-acting down motion, and retains its connection with the driving motion in every position'.
