The South Middlesex Volunteers, 1862. 'Sergeant Thompson, Enseign [Tonks?], Capt. Murdoch, Capt. and Adjt. Spence Turner, Capt. Bromley, Lord Ranelagh, Major Atherley, Lieut. Clayton, Sergeant Lock, Ensign Gilley, Hon. Mr. Vereker, Capt. Hawker, Lieut. Gaskoin. This noted corps was, as its title, the 2nd Middlesex, implies, one of the earliest formed. Its efficiency and popularity are in a great measure owing to the energetic management, tempered by judgment, of its Colonel, Viscount Ranelagh. The present number of the corps is about fifteen hundred, and it is daily increasing in strength...Most of the officers of this regiment are military men, many of them having seen much service in India and the Crimea'. Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Heron Jones, 7th Viscount Ranelagh KCB (1812-1885) was an enthusiastic supporter of the movement to recruit amateur soldiers for the defence of Britain.
