Légende

The proposed road through Hyde Park to the International Exhibition, [London], 1862. 'The vexed question of the approaches to the Exhibition building still seems to be far from a satisfactory settlement. It is, however, understood that one point in connection with this subject has been satisfactorily arranged. The narrow and inconvenient duct which alone leads from Belgravia into Sloane-square, and thence to Chelsea and Brompton, is to be widened, the local authorities having handed it over to the Metropolitan Board of Works for the purpose. A suggestion has been made, which is not without weight, that, as the new roads which are asked for must tend to the improvement of the property of the Royal commissioners of the Exhibition of 1851 at South Kensington, they ought to be called on to contribute some portion of the necessary cost of such increased access to their estate. There can be no doubt that they have adequate funds in hand for such a purpose at least'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862.
