Monumental brass to the late Mr. Robert Stephenson in Westminster Abbey, [London], 1862. A monumental brass to the memory of Robert Stephenson, by Hardman, of Birmingham, from a design by Gilbert Scott, has recently been laid down in the nave of Westminster Abbey, about midway between the western door and the choir screen. It is fixed in a polished granite slab about 8ft. in length, the figure, border, and ornamental corners being of brass. On the inner part of the slab are fleurs de lis cut into the stone; and on the border round the brass is the following inscription: "Sacred to the memory of Robert Stephenson, M.P., D.C.L., F.R.S., &c., late President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, who died 12th Oct. A.D. 1859, aged 59 years".' Stephenson (1803-1859) was the only son of George Stephenson, the famed railway and locomotive engineer; many of the achievements popularly credited to his father were actually joint efforts of father and son.
