Colours and bugles presented to the London Rifle Brigade by the Lady Mayoress, 1861. 'Flag for Royal Saluting Point; Flag for Saluting Point...The Lady Mayoress presented on Saturday last a magnificent set of regimental colours and a pair of silver bugles of great beauty and value to the London Rifle Brigade, at the Crystal Palace, in the presence of upwards of 10,000 people. The colours, sixteen in number, included, among others, a Royal standard and a saluting-flag, bearing the initials of the brigade and the well-known civic arms and motto, in gold. They are the gift of the Corporation of London...to mark their sense of the patriotism which at the beginning of the volunteer movement led some 1500 of the citizens spontaneously to band themselves together with the view to the national defence...The silver bugles (manufactured by Distin)...bore the following inscription: "Presented by Lady Olliffe, the Lady Mayoress, on behalf of the ladies of the city of London, who offer to the officers and members of the London Rifle Volunteer Brigade this testimony of their sympathy with the patriotism which has united them for the defence of all that is dear to the women of England".'
