Dr. Thomson, Bishop Designate of Gloucester and Bristol, 1861. Engraving from a photograph. 'The Rev. William Thomson, D.D., Provost of Queens' College, Oxford, Chaplain in Ordinary to the Queen, and preacher of Lincoln's Inn, has been appointed to the bishopric of Gloucester and Bristol...In 1842 he published "An Outline of the Laws of Thought," which has gone through five editions, and has been reprinted in America, and which gave him a very high position among logicians...In 1849 and 1855 he was appointed select preacher, and in 1853 Bampton lecturer, and the crowded church at each of his sermons proved how much his lectures were appreciated by the University. The course was published in 1854, under the title of "The Atoning Work of Christ." Dr. Thomson, according to "Crockford's Clerical Directory," also published several pamphlets on "An Open College Best for All," [and] "Scriptural Teaching, the Safeguard against Crime"...he was appointed Rector of All Souls', Langham-place, and shortly afterwards was elected provost of Queens' College...In 1858 he was elected preacher to the Hon. Society of Lincoln's Inn, an office of high distinction. He has also...recently published a volume of "Lincoln's Inn Sermons"'. From "Illustrated London News", 1861.
