The late Lord Herbert of Lea, 1861. '...Mr. Sidney Herbert...entered political life at an early age, in 1832, as M.P. for South Wilts, which he represented during the rest of his life; and he has from 1841 to nearly the time of his death filled various high offices of State. He was Secretary to the Admiralty from 1841 to 1845. He was, in 1855, for a brief period, Colonial Secretary; and he was Secretary for War from 1845 to 1846, from 1852 to 1855, and. again from 1859 until his retirement in the present year. His ministerial ability placed him in the front rank as a statesman. He was especially distinguished by his enlightened advocacy for an improved system of education amongst officers of the Army...He was a very short time ago created Lord Herbert of Lea. His Lordship was the possessor of a large landed property, in. the management of which he displayed an enlightened liberality and great judgment. His estates in Wiltshire and in Ireland form a lasting testimony of what may be done by a proprietor who sees to the well-being of his tenantry and the improved condition of his lands'.
