A Rest on the Road to the Fair by H.B. Willis, in the exhibition of the Royal Academy, 1861. Engraving from a painting. 'We have seldom seen cattle painted with greater truthfulness...the beasts are served up au naturel, just as they would appear after a long march, taking a brief snatch of rest on the heather-clad mountain, some reposing on the ground, others staring about them, wondering at the novel position in which they find themselves placed, and roaring recognition to one another. The three oxen which compose the group in the foreground are specially noble specimens of the bovine race, and have an air of modest nature but vigorous earnestness about them which we cannot but admire. On the right at a little distance is the drover, with his white pony and dog, talking to a female who has brought him some very opportune refreshment. The landscape is of that wild description which we find in the north, the scanty, stubbly herbage on the rock-bound table-land being admirably expressed. Behind are mountains of higher range, partially enveloped in mist'. From "Illustrated London News", 1861.
