The late Earl of Aberdeen - from a photograph by Maull and Polyblank, 1860. British politician. 'His principles were those of a moderate Conservative; and through his long and honourable course, with talents more solid than brilliant, he has always preserved the regard and esteem of all classes in this country, and has ever been looked on as a high-minded, well-meaning, and sagacious statesman...[He] took a leading part in the conferences, negotiations, and treaties preceding and following the sojourn of Napoleon at Elba, and those again which occurred after the battle of Waterloo...an ardent philo-Hellenist, he founded the Athenian Society...His Lordship was also known to have been honoured in a special manner with the personal confidence and esteem of his Sovereign'.
