Légende

Padre Giovanni addressing the people in front of the Jesuits' College, Naples - from a sketch by our special artist, Frank Vizetelly, 1860. 'During the fetes given at Naples in honour of the entry of King Victor Emmanuel into that city a boat, constructed by the fishermen of Santa Lucia, emblematical of the one from which Garibaldi landed at Marsala, was paraded about the streets by torchlight, and manned by red-shirted Garibaldini. It remained stationary for some time in the square in front of the Jesuits' College, and while there Padre Giovanni, who had followed Garibaldi throughout the whole campaign, was hoisted into it, and in a few fervent words stirred up the enthusiasm of the people for their new King and the great kingmaker'.
