'Saperlotte!...que je voudrais donc que ma femme ait fini d'improviser son quatrain sur les beautés de la nature dans la plaine St. Denis...! nous marchons toujours, mais ses vers n'avencent pas!...'. Husband: 'Good heavens!...how I wish my wife would finish improvising her quatrain on the beauties of nature in La Plaine Saint-Denis...! we are still walking, but her verses are not advancing!...'. Satirical criticism of 'bluestockings': women with interests beyond housework and childcare. Female authors were often depicted as mannish and ugly - the implication being that their intellectual output was just as objectionable as their looks.
