Improved street architecture: Mr. Harry Emanuel's new house of business in Brook-Street, Hanover-Square, [London], 1860. View of '...one of the most unique and commodious buildings for business and domestic purposes at the west end of London...Mr. C. O. Parnell...was the author [ie architect] of the plan...The material is red brick with stone facings, and...most elaborately ornamented with stucco facings and large windows, subdivided into two sashes only, each being glazed with single sheets of the best plate-glass. The base of the building in the interior is devoted to the strong iron and fireproof keeps, in which are deposited every night most costly jewels and precious stones, large chests of plate, &c.; rooms for cleaning gold and silver plate; separate compartments for trade purposes...On the ground floor is the shop, or showroom...On the same floor, and in immediate communication, are the diamond and model rooms, with various recesses, tables, and desks, for the employes of the establishment. On the first floor is a whole suite of elegant rooms, suitable either for the purposes of a commodious dwelling-house or a more extensive display of the materials of the costly trade in which Mr. Harry Emanuel is engaged'.From "Illustrated London News", 1860.
