St. Chad's new schools, Shrewsbury, 1860. 'The design, which speaks well for the good taste of the architect, Mr. Edward Haycock, of Shrewsbury, is elaborate and well carried out, and is among the best, we believe, to which the Committee of Council on Education have ever made a grant (their grant to this being £1063). The contractor, Mr. John Treasure, Newport, Salop, has done justice to the design and executed his work in a most satisfactory manner, so that now it is completed it presents to the view a handsome and imposing structure. The buildings are of Elizabethan character, built of brick, with Grinshill freestone dressings to the plinth, quoins, chimneys, windows with mullions, and transoms. The east end of the building is surmounted by a bell-turret and cross of freestone; and midway below, on a shield of the same stone, are cut the armorial bearings of St. Chad, from whom the parish takes its name. The roofs, ornamented at the ridges, are covered with blue tiles. On each side of the school a teacher's residence is provided - one for the master, the other for the mistress'.
