His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales laying the first stone of the Lambeth School of Art, [London], 1860. 'The laying of the foundation-stone...by his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, who for the first time took part as a principal in a public ceremony, was a graceful commencement of his public duties, and a welcome declaration of the interest he takes in the furtherance of the study of art among his future subjects, and of a warm desire for the improvement of the manufacturing and commercial destinies of the country at large...His Royal Highness, accompanied by Sir C. Phipps, Colonel Brace, and Lieutenant-Colonel Keppel...was enthusiastically cheered by the large body of spectators assembled to view the ceremony...his Royal Highness, with the customary formalities, laid the stone, saying as he did so, "In the faith of Jesus Christ we place this foundation-stone; in the name of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. Amen."...The school, designed by Mr. Pearson, will be an extensive building, and be built hi the style of the thirteenth century; but the funds in the hands of the committee will be practically applied, and not frittered away in useless ornamentation'.
