The Prince of Wales at Montreal - The Prince opening the Industrial Exhibition in the Crystal Palace, 1860. Exhibition hall designed by John William Hopkins. '...the Prince entered, and took his seat upon a throne which was erected on one side of the building...the people all rose, and the Oratorio Society of Montreal sang the National Anthem, accompanied by two organs, which are being exhibited in the galleries. His Excellency the Governor-General, surrounded by his Council, standing at the foot of the throne, read a brief address to the Prince, and his Royal Highness replied: "...I am not ignorant of the high position attained by Canada in the [London] Great Exhibition of 1851...and, as carrying out the design of that memorable undertaking, this smaller, but to Canada most interesting collection of the products of your land, and of works of art and industry, has my entire sympathy, and claims my best wishes for its success. I hope and believe it will realise all the objects for which it has been designed".' From "Illustrated London News", 1860.
